Day 1 - Idea and setup

I signed up for the My First Game Jam a while ago and kind of forgot about it. I've never done a game jam before and just started learning Unity earlier this year. July turned out to be a big travel month for me, so I need to basically start and complete the game in about 5 days. I decided to try anyway, and this weekend, came up with an idea, got the project and gitlab repo set up, and coded at least the starter mechanics.

The theme is "free", and I brainstormed some ideas around that: freedom to me means choice, and our choices also can add to or take away from freedom. I thought about "free" in relationship to cost and money. Eventually I went with my first through, which was "free fall", because frankly, the idea of creating a game where something or someone is in free fall seemed like the most reasonable mechanic for a 4-5 day effort (only 2 of which are weekend days).

I've put about 8 hours into it so far and had a bunch of ideas this morning. Since I only have a few more hours of time left where I can work on it, I'm going to focus on 1) finishing out how a level ends and 2) creating a few more levels.

Because I am not an artist, I am leaning heavily on created assets right now - mostly from kenney.nl.

Things I got done:

* Menu screen and scene loader

* Settings (just volume control at this point)

* Character movement controlled through buttons, and rotation based on movement

* Minor character and sprite animations

* Cloud background movement and spawners

* Enemy and reward spawners

* Health bar

* Collected display

Things I need to do:

* End the level! This will include setting a height

* Load the next level!

* What happens when health = 0

* End the game!

There are a few things I would like to do but may not get to:

* Start level with plane dropping bunny (instead of bunny coming out of nowhere)

* Add parachute mechanic to slow down

Polish:

* Cloud speed slow down for bg clouds (and to keep game from being visual mess)

* Animation on coins

* Damage sound effect

Right now, I wouldn't say the game is actually fun. It's getting there, but it's kind of tedious. I think the level end will obv make a big difference - there will be an objective and a reward for succeeding.

Onward!
